Would You Like To See More F1 Drivers Trying Their Hand At Other Forms Of Racing?

Kimi’s attempts at Rallying got me thinking. Prior to Stefan Bellof dying at Spa, formula 1 drivers used to race in numerous categories of racing. Would you like to see F1 drivers trying other forms of motorsport between rounds. They do have the time on their hands seeing that they are not allowed to test anymore. Plus we could see how they go against good drivers in other categories…

    ive been bitching about this for years, the good ole ole days when stirling moss and phill hill would race le mans the indy 500, and the f1 calender, mario andretti was racing the indy car and F1 series at the same time,
    but i don’t think any one wants to see their talent bested by the others any more, this is the reason monaco and the indy 500 and the coca cola 600, are all on the same day, same with when the usgp and lemans were on the same day, the only ones doing this anymore seam to be the nascar guys, tony stewart is racing somewhere on every weekend, if it isn’t nascar sprint cup, or a minor league nascar series on some billion dollar facility its at some local dirt track somewhere, weather you like or hate nascar you got to respect the passion for racing in guys like that

    Personally I’d love to see F1 drivers try their hand at the Australian V8 Supercar series. Just because its not like a world known sport like F1, WRC, Motogp and NASCAR. Last year Boris Said, NASCAR driver, had a go at the V8s last year for the big enduros.
    But unfortunatly the enduros are on during the F1 seasons (September/October) so we’d have to settle for former F1 drivers.
    I’d love to see F1 drivers tackle The Mountain (Mount Panorama) against Lowndes, Whincup, Tander, Davison, Johnson, Winterbottom etc. Its a massive event for us and if an F1 driver was to compete, I’d love to know what they think of our category and the tracks we have.
    I know your asking about racing during the break, though they could try the paperclip (Ipswich Raceway) on Aug 21-23 this year. Don’t mind who I’d just love to see it.

    I’d like to see more of it, Vettel was at the Rally Finland on a corporate jolly and he said he’d like to have a go at rallying in the future.
    To be honest, I thought modern drivers contracts might prevent them from competing in other “dangerous” sports in case they got injured.
    I know football (soccer) players have prevention clauses like that in their contracts. Good to see F1 hasn’t gone down that road yet.
    @rosbif, lol poor sod!

    Would love to see Michael Schumacher in OZ to drive the V8 super cars. Holden preferably.

    NO F1 is special its like no other and to be best you have to specialize.

    That would be great, but many of the modern drivers don’t seem to be interested. Raikkonen rallying is fine, but it appears to be a career change rather than an interest in doing something in addition to F1.
    Bourdais and Piquet both spend the F1 off-season racing, and at the moment they have a little more time on their hands too…wouldn’t be surprised to see Piquet doing some touring car races somewhere as a guest while he’s waiting for a new drive in F1, he’s had quite a lot of past success in that format despite only ever doing one-off entries.
    It would help if sponsorship agreements were exclusive to F1, and didn’t prevent the drivers from doing things with different sponsors in other categories. It would also be easier if the big sportscar races (Daytona, Le Mans & Spa 24hrs, for example) were all in the middle weekend of a 3-week break in the F1 calendar – in any case, with the current testing ban they have the time to do the odd DTM or BTCC race if they can find a ride. Another thing blocking the drivers from doing things the old way is the highly structured nature of F1 feeder series, you can’t just do an F2 race to pick up the start money these days…
    EDIT @allan
    Some drivers had those clauses in their contracts decades ago. Patrick Depailler had a “no dangerous pursuits” clause in his Tyrrell contract as he was prone to having all sorts of accidents doing macho sports – even motorbikes were off limits after a couple of accidents. He waited 5 years to try hang-gliding, and started the week after his Tyrrell contract expired…five months later he broke both his legs by flying into a mountainside, prematurely ending his only season with Ligier, who sacked him for unprofessional behaviour even though they hadn’t put any clauses in his contract…
