Why does Formula One and other open wheel racing series have time limits on their races?

What is the reason for the two hour time limit? I watch all forms of auto racing and never totally understood this.

it is most probably to match with the TV scheduldes…and also organizers (track owners)…suffer losses if the race extnds beyond 2hts…as they cannot shoo away ppl in the grand stands until the race is over and the trophy presentation etc is over….

the more time ppl are der on the stands…more is the electricity etc consumed ….
also der maybe other minor loses which all contributed become big…

its all because of profit and loss and economics….nothing with pure racing…..pure racing means to compete for specific laps and race is complete only after the leader crosses the start finish line after completing specific laps….let it even go for days….;-)

For commercial and safety purposes mostly.
It suits the TV networks that they know what’s the most the race can go on.
They usually give it 2-2,5 hours, they fill in the end with the ceremony, maybe the post race interview and some commenting.
If it rains and it’s too slow like in Monaco they can fill in the whole show with the race and dispense with the post race show and interviews and not go off schedule.
And drivers are only human and no matter how fit they are F1 cars are extremely demanding and there has to be a limit.
Plus the whole show will start to bore if it goes on for too long.
I think 2 hours of racing is enough to quench the thirst for racing of even the hardcore fans, so it’s a case of “we’re done here, let’s pack up and go home what’s the point of taking it any further?.And we have a flight to catch.”
