    Formula One was not invented from one day to another; it is the evolution of motor racing from the very start. Organized automobile racing started back in the 1890s. As it became more and more popular, several championships were held, and each was governed by a set of regulations (formulae). The highest of these was renamed ‘Formula One’ in 1950, when the first official World Championship was held (but they didn’t build new cars for it – they used existing race cars).
