Two years ago, Spyker bought the Midland F1 team (the worst team in F1) for $106 Million. Ferrari is rumored to spend around $450M. And I think the other guy was right Toyota and Honda are around $500M per year.

It costs about 50 million dollars but you have no hope of starting an F1 team.

Starting a brand new team from scratch? To enter assuming you get the ok from the FIA you need to front up a 100 million dollar fee. Once you add up the cost of a wind tunnel and other facilities you could easily be looking at a cost of somewhere close to 400 million. Thats before wages and cost of materials and transport to events etc. Your first year could easily end up costing you around 700 million dollars. But thats just an estimate

The bargin basement approach would probably be in the area of about $400 million to start a team, though this would require some good fortune in a number of areas, and would be with the thought of doing nothing more than being a back marker in the field.

There is a $100 million cost just to get your application in to FIA. At that point, you would need to establish a facility and hire all the needed people, and aquire some intellectual property (such as a chasis design). While it would be possible to simply develop such property on your own once the team is established, the total cost here would go up since you would need to have the team established and functioning for 1-2 years before ever racing.

Lastly, a small portion of the initial costs would then be used to fund a first race season, with a continued future cost in the area of $100-150 million each year to maintain back marker status. And some of the initial operating budget would probably need to go towards the campaign at having FIA actually accept the application in the first place.

The better option would be to purchase an existing team – given the costs of starting a bad team from scratch, the investment of aquiring a team, even a very bad one, is quite a bargin (the $100 million FIA bond is already paid for, you have established IP, and there are facilities and employees in place).

If you have to ask, you can’t afford it.

Loads and loads of money. F1 is a super expensive sport and that’s why teams look for sponsors to help support the cost of running (or even putting up) an F1 team. Total cost? Think lots of zeroes.

    millions
