The buttons on the wheel control a variety of electronic things (small computers) on the car.
They do things like start/stop an electronic speed limiter that prevents them from speeding in the pits. Or turn “traction control” on and off. Or change exactly how much fuel is going to the engine. Or change what things the digital displays on the wheel are telling the driver.
The gear shifting is also done by a computer. The controls are paddles placed behind the wheel (not the buttons up front). When a paddle is squeezed the computer disengages the clutch, shifts a gear, and reengages the clutch. It does this way faster than a driver can using conventional controls.

the buttons on the steering wheel serve multiple purposes including power surge during shifting.. a quick power surge.. change in the aerodynamics and spoiler positions etc etc.. they do shift gears but not traditional gears.. the gears they shift are like paddles behind the steering wheel which are tapped for shifts.. the left is down shift and the right is up shift.. also known as paddle shifters.. they’re available in cars like the Honda Fit and Acura RL these days..

with some buttons the pilot can adjust the fuel consumption versus engine power, can turn the speed limiter on/off, can switch off everything in emergency. There’s a button for the blinking red light in the rear to switch in case of hazardous situations or poor visibility. They also have a button to open the fuel feed compartment and one to disconnect powertrain, in case the engine seizes, to make pushing of the car possible.
I’m not sure, but probably, the pilot also has access to adjusting the traction control system.
The gearbox is semi-automatic,the driver makes the shift via buttons on the wheel, although the gear changes are made by automated hydraulic mechanisms (can change a gear in a cuople of millisecs).

They mainly are used for shifting gears. Other buttons are used as follows: one for selecting neutral, one for releasing liquid through a tube in the helmet for the driver to replenish his fluid levels and one for the radio.
