  1. Carmina says:

No, but it helps. Karting is a very good place to start honing your driving skills, reaction times, racing lines, braking, finesse, and engine usage. Most of today’s drivers come from karting but there are a few exceptions for example: Jaques Villeneuve

  2. know it all says:

dale earnhardt jr. is another exception. he started with late models

  3. PAPABILL says:

Thats a very good place to start.Others ar the ledgends and bandalero series.

  4. hornet_one2003 says:

Many great drivers like Michael Schumacher and Alonso started at very young age. Basically go kart is the only thing anyone can drive at such young age.

It’s not a pre requistic, but its a simple form of racing, so most beginners would start there

  5. michinoku2001 says:

No, there are other entry-level classes such as Super-V and quarter midgets.

  6. Katelyn Ferrari says:

Apparently, yes. Because they need to aquire the skills needed to become a top driver/racer. For example, two-time F1 world champion Fernando Alonso. He started karting (is it karting?) at age three. And look at him now. Youngest double world champion. Or Michael Schumacher. He started karting at age four and he is now the most successful F1 driver ever. As for NASCAR, I have no proof of it. I am only an F1 expert.

  7. Kate H says:

Not if they have enough money to buy a seat

  8. Jan T says:

No, they don’t have to. But for the cost there is nothing else that feel like a high grip F1 car like a 125cc shifter. Given the lightweightness, braking, accel, and cornering its the cheapest way to start your career

  9. b-b-b-brengun says:

F1 drivers learn their craft in karting.

    Nascar yoikes learn in tractors/harvesters.

Little known fact; a large majority of Nascar rookie pinknecks have tremendous difficulty in adjusting from up-down harvesting to roundy-roundy ovals!!

  10. Rich G says:

All might be extreme, but kart racing is no doubt a good place to start learning.
